Just An Experiment
You open your eyes only to feel the force of light above you. It was much too bright to be the work of men.
This had to be the light of heaven. This was the beautiful, peaceful place they always told you about in church. You don't doubt the chances you've died since the blow to your cranium was so painful...You cringe just at the memory and the bruise on your head aches in response.
You reach your fingers up to touch the area and feel the texture of a bandage placed right over it. The warmth of blood dyes the bandage red and to your own shock, you realize that the blow was much more dire than expected. You look down and see that you are on a bed. The mattress is stiff but the blankets covering your body are soft enough to soothe you. The room is entirely white with only a few windows covering the walls. Doors that lead to unknown locations are placed in corners and you can't help but be distracted by the electric crackling of wires.
"You took quite a hit there. So glad to see you're awake." A voice startles you and you turn your head abruptly.
Through the light you can make out a woman. Her hair is dark and pulled into a flimsy knot for a hairstyle. Her gray eyes are covered by glasses and her round lips possess the shame purple shade as her nails.
You open your mouth to speak. Why am I here?
What happened?
But the words don't come out. No matter how much strain you place on your throat, not a single sound escapes your lips.
The woman smiles. "An expected reaction. They always try to talk first when they arrive. You aren't much different. "The first step of this process is to remove the subject's vocal cords. One flaw humans have is their inability to stop talking. We should only speak when our words have meaning."
You feel your body grow cold at the words. Knowing your own voice could be taken away so easily was a nerve raking thought. If your voice could be stolen so easily, what else did they take?
Why did this mysterious woman do this? What was the purpose?
The woman grabs a needle from her lab coat and fills it up with a purple serum placed next to her. " Wondering why you're here, aren't you? You are here as a form of experimentation. My group has dedicated themselves to improving the human race, us included."
We found you to be a fitting subject and I will be sentencing you to a trial of tests. This is the first one. If you live, we will move on to the next and allow you to become an improved human being. If you die, we will find another replacement that fits our requirements."
The woman grabs your arm and hoists it upward. The needle sinks into your skin and you can't manage to cry of pain as the serum seeps into your bloodstream. You feel your heart pounding faster within your chest as the serum spreads and claims your life.
The woman shakes your head in disappointment. "Another weak specimen. Oh well, it was nice meeting you. I do hope the next human is of better of use than you were."
The words slowly begin to fade into the darkness and slur into the cracking of electricity looming overhead. It's all you can hear until the sound of singing growing louder with each passing second. Now you know you're in heaven.
